Follow Your Passion-Yeah Ok.

In the years since starting My Quest
i.e. since I woke up to Life
I've heard alot of people saying 'just follow your passion'
Ok, I get that...I'm not stupid after all
But what those people don't seem to understand is how do you follow your passion
When you have no clue what your passion is

So I read alot of books
because everyone knows a book will tell you what your passion is
(smirk)
I followed the blogs of those who were following their passion
(thinking I might find a hidden clue)
I started questioning those passion followers - "How did you know?"
(hoping some of the magic would rub off)
But most of the responses were the same
A stupid smirk (yeah I could see it through email) and the response
"Oh you just know"
(by the way passion followers you're lucky I have great restraint
because I wanted to scrunch the smirk between my finger tips)

So I pressed on
"How do you know?"
and the response was always
"It's that one thing you want to do all day. Can't imagine not doing it."
(my teeth and fingers clenched)
"Just focus on one thing. You're too scattered."
Ok. That makes some sense. Thank you.
So I used all I learned and tried to focus on one thing.
But instead of focusing, my soul pulled even harder in different directions.
Thinking perhaps the passion followers were part of an ancient secret society
I just had to accept I wasn't part of it & quit trying to find my passion

I let that one part of me that wanted to play with Madame Styx do so
and now she's become part of me
I often think in Madame Styx sketch-format and laugh at inopportune times
But she's not my passion if defined as 'that one thing you want to do & can't imagine not'
rather, she's the manifestation of my inner guide who tries to talk sense to me
and knowing I'm pig-headed
had to resort to using line drawings to get through to me
successfully becoming an extension of who I am

In turn, all the other things that call to me started shouting 'Me too! Me too!'
Telling myself Focus! One thing! I tried ignoring them.
Then I went on vacation
I learned more about Amelia Earhart, the Wright Brothers, Harley,
some presidents, some military,  & others before & after them
they didn't follow one passion
in some way or another their other passions fed into each other
yes, one always stands out ahead of the others
but it's in following what they felt drawn to that helped them succeed in the others
it wasn't success measured in dollars or fame
(although it may have started with that desire)
but rather measured in its ability to help humanity
to make an impact - a stepping stone

What I've discovered so far is there are no rules for discovering your passion
Passion defines itself differently for everyone
It can be one specific passion
or seemingly unrelated interests that end up linking into each other
like the links in a chain link fence
building upon each other, expanding, strengthening

My passion is Life
each of my interests exposes who I am and my boundaries are stretched
I explore, learn, grow and share
And in the process I hope to one day touch someone else
and open their eyes to the awesomeness they hold inside
if they just get out of their own way

I'm thankful to the passion followers who do what they do
to the beauty they bring into the world
and truth be told if I were to really think about one thing
that makes my soul jump cartwheels & gives me goosebumps
it would be music
but I don't play an instrument nor can I sing
so is it a passion even if you can't do it?

Follow your passion to me means follow the voice in my soul
all of them
with no predefined measures of success
just have fun with it

  1. Best thing about music???? You can listen to it while you pursue all those other things that pull at you! I frequently have to remind myself how much music enhances my life. Because sometimes I just forget.....to listen! I have a piano that I sometimes think about selling but....I know that when the urge to play comes, no matter how badly I do it.....I'd be sooooo sad if it weren't there! Ok, enough rambling from me!

  2. Whatever works for you is what you should do! I like how you just call Life your passion. That covers it all!

  3. I can relate only too well. I mean, yeah, I'm an artist, I work at it almost every day. But I'm not necessarily driven to make art. I enjoy it, it's what I do. I just don't feel like it is a passion, more like an avocation. And music? I'm more passionate about it, but I don't practice playing an instrument any more. I like what Robin said, how it enhances my life. So many songs bring memories of the time and place I heard that song, it is a part of my life.

so quit squishing my dang lips!!:-)

  4. I find passion in my children and Greg Brown's music and sunshine and chocolate and little people and cold beer that's not diet, girls and more girls and good food and laughter. Oh yeah, and I like to write once in awhile.

  5. My passion is my family, my children, but staying home to raise them certainly hasn't made me rich! ha ha ha!
