I was doing a brainless task last night when the power went out
I blinked a few times trying to accustom my eyes to the
A B S O L U T E D A R K N E S S
telling myself that NO, nothing was creeping out of the shadows
T O G E T M E
(blinking faster)
Once my eyes dilated I found that the darkness wasn't 'absolute'
Although I couldn't see as much I could still make things out
I just had to move slower so as not to fall and bash my head
and...wait did that shadow just move?
(blinking faster)

It occurred to me in the safety of the light when the generator kicked on
(heehee)
that I had been in a blackout phase of life
Between seeing people wandering around who weren't physically there
and my brain not functioning quite right
and my body acting as if it belonged to someone else...
There were no answers...nobody could say when the lights would come back on
The shadows loomed and threatened to get me
Then I blinked
I learned to move slowly as I became acclimated
I started to recognize things in the darkness
I found the love of my family, the strength which backed me, I found laughter
But I also discovered that sometimes the darkness invaded my brain
It spoke of untold horrors waiting in future shadows
Trying to convince me that I must now live life hidden...and safe
But there's a light inside me
that reminds me that I wouldn't have been given another chance
if I was to live hidden away in the safety of home
Instead I am moving slowly in the darkness
I am finding that things here look, sound, smell...differently
I am reconnecting to life on different terms
And it's quite beautiful
So for now I'm taking it easy
the darkness is dissipating
but while the shadows still roll and threaten
I'm beginning to understand its language
And when I find patches of light - I bask in their beauty
Like this super rare Christmas hug and smile from my most precious gift
