Caged Dead Birds

A couple weeks ago I started dreaming about cages
I didn't think much of it since I've been feeling caged for a while
Then a week ago I dreamed of seeing a bird happily standing on a house plant
Realizing it had escaped its cage I went to see
It was a small cage piled high with bird droppings in the center
and a dead bird or two
Apologizing, I cleaned out the cage and replaced the food and water
Caught the live bird and asked it to please stop pecking me so hard as I tried to help
As I placed my hand with bird into the cage I found it didn't fit
I pulled my hand out and the bird had to hunch over and even then
the door wouldn't close
I couldn't understand

Soon after I ran away I started thinking about labels & conformity
Most of the time, the first question anyone asks is 'What do you do?'
When the real question is 'What is your label?'
Mostly, it's just our way of trying to find commonality
starting a conversation
And then we use our preconceptions and try to fit this person into a mental niche

Those who don't ask the question, think it
They will look at someone's external appearance and think
'What is your label?'
By your skin color, race, gender, clothing, your hair, cleanliness, your demeanor,
your possessions, your family & pets, your hobbies or occupation...whatever
judgments are made and filed away in the mental niche

And sometimes we carry this a bit further
We believe so strongly that our way is the right way
that we try to get others to conform to our beliefs, our ways
We bring out the cookie cutter and obliterate the beauty of individuality
We all do it to some degree
Politicians, corporate execs, rock stars, computer programmers,
housewives, doctors, artists, teachers...whatever
What works for me, must be the right way, so do it this way

And then come my favorite group
The rebels
Those that stand on the sidelines avoiding the cookie cutters
Those that can look upon the conformers and smile
Those that can offer the most to society by introducing new ways
But there is a danger that lurks amongst those that rebel

Those that rebel can't get caught up in being a rebel
because there's a fine line between the rebel and the conformer
Rebels see the injustices caused by the conformers
In our disgust we begin to push against
We start to fight against whatever it is that is offending us
We erect invisible walls between us and the offender
We will not be changed
And in the process, and without realizing it, we erect more walls

In our determination not to conform
we place ourselves within a cage of our own making
instead of using our passion to foster change
we use it to justify our stubbornness
And just like the conformers
we fail to grow
 ~ ~
And I learned that my dream pointed this out
I left the world of conformity and shed my labels
Only to slip in the rut and conform again by slapping on a label
of first housewife then artist

when the reality is I want to be neither
I can be both and much more
there is no need to choose to be one thing
because someone said so

Just like the bird who didn't fit in the cage
I'm too big for cages anymore
I can balance amongst the conformers and the rebels
I can't change either party
because of a little thing called free will
but I can change myself
and hope that it inspires change in others

~
By the way
perhaps the dead birds in the empty cage represent labels
and the pile of shit...
preconceptions that keep us from stepping into our greatness

  1. This is crazy that this topic came up…just a few weeks ago my company sent me to a diversity training class. This class was about this very subject. We were learning about Stereo types or what you call labels. We learned that not only is race a label but so is the way one acts in life as well as culture. We also were made aware that sometimes out prejudices are taught to us by our parents, friends and experiences though life itself. I feel I don’t have may prejudices but I know I do…when I see some 400 pounds person and since I am working so hard to get in to shape I start to judge that person’s life style. I have to stop myself and say Dave it’s not easy to change…I should know…so why do I still judge?

I too believe that one should live life as inspiration to others and try never to preach or take thing out of context nor force one to be like you. My way is not the right way nor is it the wrong way…I have always been one whom listens to everyone’s options and ways of life with and open and embracing mind. I am always open to another way to do things as I grow through this thing call LIFE. Peace BFF.

  2. I've found often when people asked me what I *do*, it's a conversation starter or common courtesy, and nothing more.
When I wasn't doing art all the time, I said I was a housewife, because even though I am ALWAYS an artist inside, sometimes my outside role is housewife, and that's cool.
And when I am actively working with art, I reply Artist.
I never give much of this a second thought because I am happy with whatever role it is I am immersed in, be it yard keeper, wielder of the scythe or plumber. (okay, I usually cuss when I'm plumbing, but happy I can say I can DO IT)
I haven't even considered any of this in years. I guess I am what I am.
    Happy.

  3. I remember so well when I first stopped working how much I dreaded that question of "So, what do YOU do?" Like, how are you useful? And I think the only reason I dreaded it was because I was so uncomfortable myself in that undefined space.

Just recently I noticed that since I become comfortable in my own skin (be that as housewife, artist, dreamer, lazy bum, traveler, sit-on-the-couch-and-knitter, etc.), that question is no longer being asked of me.

I think the world just mirrors back to us what is a big deal in our lives or minds at the moment. When it stops being important or worrisome to you, you won't notice it outside yourself anymore either. You know what I mean?

It's a grand journey we are on!! Hugs, Silke

  4. Good post Elena. You are so analytical, always searching for the meanings in things. Oh, maybe that is why you call your blog My Quest! I rarely analyze things, I just go with the flow. Unfortunately I don't seem to be flowing anywhere these days, heheh.

  5. I smiled at the responses because this is probably the first time the post wasn't all about me but rather what I'm observing in the world around me. I've been meeting new people and catching up with old and noticing patterns of behavior. I like to then compare them to my present or past situations and see what stirs up. Because I'm selfish that way; I'm now observing everything as a learning opportunity for Me. I'm not being asked what I do anymore but when one slips in I always respond with "Nothing". Beats 'housewife', it's no secret how I feel about that role heehee.

  6. Why do I feel so vain about this post? I think you know why.
