I hang my head in shame as I write
Not for something I've done
But rather something I failed to do
Every once in a while I let someone in too close
And in my desire to help I become blinded to their need to control
And I become poisoned
Hurt in the process I revert back to expecting the worst from the world
I start seeing the ugliness
and since my thoughts dwell there the world brings me more proof
of that very ugliness
Something that I thought I had outgrown from a rocky childhood
Only to learn that the poisonous friendship only served to pull off the scab
Oh so subtly
And I didn't see it coming
I didn't expect for it to impact me so negatively
It unraveled so many of the positive steps I had made
And that's why I'm ashamed
Because I folded under someone else's drama
Reminding me that I never really knew who I was to begin with
And that I have to start again even though I'm not sure where to begin
I've tried forgetting it
But subconsciously feel the change it's made inside me
My smiley happy self has been replaced with bitterness
And wishes of bad will
Feeling slightly off kilter I finally realized I was still stuck in the muck
Until this morning when I realized I have a choice
To let some crazy woman's insecurities poison me permanently
or go back to the way I used to be
I'm not going to care whether someone feels left out
Or whether someone is comfortable or not
Or if they want to make themselves sick
Or want to keep playing the victim in their 'oh woe is me' drama
It's their choice to sink or swim
I'm out of it
And I've thankfully reconnected to the anger streak
which serves to catapult me every time
You have made a wise change, and I hope your week is glorious and peace full.
ReplyDeleteUntil your efforts are put on fixing things from your own past, you are not in a place to try and fix others.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm reading between the lines of this.
Friendship is a two way street.
Not everyone feels they need fixing. Not everyone can be fixed, and generally that is the job of a professional.
It's an unhealthy thing to constantly try to do.
Life puts us on our own path that intersects with others, but we are not required to walk their path for them.
I always reassess my anger as used repeatedly, it can be an unhealthy emotion.
I'm not trying to fix anyone; to my knowledge never said I was. My problem is seeing someone hurting and trying to help them see another way. That's what I meant about not caring to do anymore. If someone wants to go through life with blinders on that's their choice. As for friendships...I'm back to preferring acquaintances.
ReplyDeleteSo nice to make your acquaintance. Would you mind introducing me to the girl up there on your new header? Her curious, caring eyes call me to be her friend. I promise not to poison her, nor make her feel she needs to build walls and fences, dress in armor or wear masks. I can see she has a good heart. If it's too much trouble, I'll just go introduce myself.
ReplyDeleteDifficult as it is, we have to let people get on with whatever misery they are in as it is their choice, we can point the way but their choice is to follow or not, no matter how much of a difference it will make to them. Frustrating, painful, yes! But absolutely essential, YES!
ReplyDeleteI think one should live their life on their own terns. I no longer let anyone’s drama ruin my day. I still feel compassion and sadness for those whom are wrapped up in drama. But I try hard to move forward and only look back to reflect on the good things in life. My memories are very precious to me and they define my life. I love most of the things I have done and experienced in my life and I plan to move forward to live, learn, explore and experience many more beauties of life not the negative uninspiring despair people like to emerge them self’s in. Don’t get me wrong I love people and feel for those living in despair and if I have the ability I would help them the best I can but not at the expense of my happiness if they are not willing to accept my help and compassion.
ReplyDeleteI want to know more about that woman on your beautiful new header too. She reminds me of you, Elena.
