THAT kind of Mom

Yeah yeah I'll admit it
I'm THAT kind of mom
The overprotective, fang-bearing, saliva-dripping, claws-exposed lioness

I'm the one who needs to meet the parents of any kids who my kid is visiting
I'm the one who will scan the sexual offender list to make sure
the area around school, friends' homes, fishing lakes
is clear...and then wonder if they've moved
(don't get me started on those not caught)
I hear a sniffle or cough or see a cut
I'm asking questions
Always asking
questions

So I can assure you my family is highly amused
that The Kid has a girlfriend
They know it's driving me nuts to give him lots of space
Dad and Step Dad have new smirks I've not seen before
(bet they wouldn't be so smirky if The Kid was a girl)

So yesterday was The Date
We're driving along to pick up The Girl and The Kid says
"Ok Ma, any questions lets get them spilled out now"
teehee
I say 'Oh, I typed out a list for her to fill out'
(just like I do for my doctor visits)
The kid laughs and asks if it's multiple choice
I say 'yes with an option that says Other and then Explain'
He's asking me what I'm planning to do
I know he's really asking if I'll be following them
And knowing how uncomfortable he is of course I have to say yes
teehee parenthood has perks after all

We pick her up and as she walks to the car I'm thinking
Cute. Shorts too short. Oooh look at those hostas.
She opens door, gets in
Oh she is cute. Wait is that perfume? Lots. And eyeshadow?
I say hi then smile and say, "He warned you about my questions right?"
She smiles and says yes and that it's ok
The Kid sits in front and The Girl in back
They're not talking to each other; I think it's too cute
The Kid who normally says a total of five words in an hour car ride
Is speaking to me non-stop
He's nervous

I drop them off
He asks me again what I'll be doing
pleading with his eyes
I smirk and say I'm heading to do an errand
and he looks relieved
I had agreed not to follow them in
Knowing I have to trust The Kid
I call out to them not to forget Stranger Danger and drive away laughing

Except I never said I wouldn't follow them
When it was time to pick them up

When we dropped her off
He got out the front and she the back
And they hugged
I couldn't resist the loud 'awwwww'
I thought they'd both melt in embarrassment

I think I'm liking this
teehee

Of course Dad and Step Dad think I'm brutal
They've seen nothing yet
~ ~ ~
Ok don't panic, I'm not THAT bad
The Kid has alot of freedoms
His tether has alot of slack
~ smirk ~

  1. My imaginary shotgun kept some boys away from visiting my daughters at the house.

  2. Oh Elena, you are not alone. I don't even have a child and I am already researching about how to hack your child's computer, drills on searching their bedroom for anything that can be used such as my daughter's diary, and of course, car with parent control (true, the little car I want can have pre-set curfew hours, perimeter where your child can drive, monitor speed limits and shut it off remotely)... man, when I put it in writing like this I sound like a psycho.

  3. I remember the story of my BIL telling my niece's male visitor, "go home and put some decent pants on or don't come back!" Evidently his pants were hanging down around his crotch. I never have been able to fathom that particular fad.

her shorts were a tad short, but she sounds like a nice girl.
