When I grow up....

At the age of 9 or 10, I was like a deer in the headlights
When the teacher asked what I wanted to be when I grew up
I was clueless...so I said I want to be a cashier
As some of the kids laughed I thought, I don't want to be a cashier
Where did that come from? Perhaps I was thinking of the money
I liked playing store so I could count out change

For some odd reason this question has been popping up in my mind
"What do you want to be when you grow up"
And I wondered if I ever did decide
There was a time when I used to love sitting my nephews down to play school
But I didn't want to be a teacher; I just loved the paper and pencils
I loved drawing cars and trains onto old boxes then giving each kid a ride
I loved taking my old string puppet and putting on a show for my Mama
Then I wanted to write kid mysteries; but quit after my fingers were stiff from writing
I wanted to be an astronaut, a cave explorer, discover kings in the pyramids
Then I found out I was claustrophobic
Then as a teen I wanted to join the Marines and become an FBI agent
But I quickly learned that cops can't do much to help
And the Marines, well as the last kid at home I knew I couldn't leave
my Mama home with my Dari

I never did decide; instead I fluttered on the wind
Ended up in a career I loved but didn't quite feel 'right'
This phase I'm in, this part of my journey, is interesting
Although I can feel that it's not where I'll stay, I know it's important
It feels as a preparation phase
Like old video games where you collect power pellets to be used later

And for a while now I've seen myself in my dreams
with indigo blue streaks in my hair
And it makes me laugh...thinking oh how silly
But night after night it comes along with the question
"What do you want to be when you grow up"
My original response is that I'm already grown up and on the descent
But deep inside is a little 'something' that squirms and twitches
Something is going on

Following last night's dream of my blue streaked hair
I saw that I was wearing a beautiful pair of indigo blue crystal earrings
And in that moment I thought "I got it!"
I'm thinking about this with my 'earth brain'; I'm thinking linear age progression
I'm still a kid at heart; this 'growing up' has more to do with my next goal
Because each thing I reach for results in growth
The indigo blue hair
I think is trying to tell me to lighten up, have fun, be as a kid again
Because in doing so, the world becomes a vast playground
The learning, the experiences, the curiosity

And if that's not it
Well then I guess I'll have to say cashier
Until I figure it out
~
Now to look into blue highlights....

  1. Ah, indigo blue hair sounds so vibrant! Many of us are still wondering "what do I want to be when I grow up", ha!

  2. Blue highlights=awesome. We should never take ourselves too seriously. I fall into that trap A LOT. When I grow up I want to be a college professor teaching either literature or acting...or both, heck in community colleges that's completely possible. Until then, I will gratefully hold down my service job and do what I can each day, just like a lot of folks I know. :)

  3. Well Elena, being you is what your search is for, the real you, any career is just a dressing for who you really. Either you define who you are or your surroundings and your career does. And the blue color is a spiritual color with meaning, why not check it out. It also means that spiritual matters aren´t heavy, true understanding is serious of course but in its own way it is light and joy.

  4. I am in such awe of your growth, Elena. Your searching and questioning and reaching is so inspiring to me. Sometimes I think that I, too, will be trying to figure my life out all the way up until I take my final breath.

Wishing your and your dear Mama a beautiful Mothers Day this Sunday. I hope she is feeling better.
    Love and hugs,

  5. I loved this post because it got me thinking - I now wonder - is growing up a good thing? If we did not know what age we are, what age would we be?
    Hugs to you, Elena!

  6. Then need to know is a life long quest...that leads us forward.. but it can be an obcession also where you forget to look and be aware of what life does have to offer. After reading your post I can relate to your question and I also have felt that I need so very badly to have that direct course to follow and then life will be as I've always dreamed... and I'm realizing now that I'm chasing after instead of being here now...and there are more days now then ever before that I really am having to say I just don't know and I'm Ok with that...I don't have to have the map all laid out in front of me...what's been flashing in my face is now what's really happen now and be present to it and the rest works it way out...Not an easy spot to being in and I have to admit I'm not liking it all that much but when I can center in to that flow...the rich natural flow of life I am at peace where I stand and life it good...in fact it feels more like a blessing...though it's really a challenge to be in that state of awareness...something I really need to be intune to...and to do that I have to practice and practice making a conscienous contact with a greater force in my life...

  7. I totally go for the blue highlights! You could pull it off, and I think there is a product called "Special FX" that has bright blue....which of course would be deep on your hair....
Growing UP is over rated. Continual growth is the key!

    XXOO~~

  8. Well just so you know, Jon is always saying, "Growing old is inevitable, growing up is a choice". I think that if you take a break from taking care of mama or when she's healed and you're back on your own, you should go and get a blue streak. I have done that, blue streaks, pink streaks, you have to experiment, do something out of the norm. I now have a white streak (which I have seriously thought of going and having done in blue or purple lately). I don't think you should have to worry about what you're going to be when you grow up, I think you are a beautiful "art" work in progress being created by God. The person who stops dreaming, stops learning, and stops wondering is only taking up space. You are a remarkable person who is growing and teaching with each word that you write, each artistic stroke, each thought and question you put out there! You are an inspiration and I think that is who you are meant to be, but it won't be when you grow up, because you are evolving moment by moment, day by day!
Come on down, we'll streak our hair together!!
