Sometimes even I crack up by the things that pop into my head. Such as this:
Elena's Timeline in Shoes
~ ~ ~
In college I wore something like this
with tights and skirts
until my Mama hid them and threw them away
said they were 'inappropriate'
Upon graduation and into job #1
And all those nights of partying
I wore these
all - the - time
Ignoring everyone's comments that I should wear this, that or the other
And oh the stories these could tell
Just looking at them now evoke smiles
And then shy grins
And then hand over eyes and blushes
Did you know I could climb a fence, deck rooftop and
scale up electrical conduit to the second floor balcony in those heeled ones?
While wearing elbow length gloves?
Stupidity? Yeah...but oh what fun!
(My Mama recently returned these that she found in my old closet)
But eventually work provided these
And the 12-14 hour workdays required the dreaded
"Sensible Shoe"
and with it came sensible sneakers, house slippers, marriage, mortgage, bills,
conforming adulthood,
job changes, crying baby, daycares, longer work hours, more sensible shoes
~ ever notice how they all look the same ~
Then came my Dad's death and surgeries and an early mid-life crisis
and I stepped into these
And oh the stories they could tell
Just looking at them now evoke smiles
And make my head lift high with pride
as I remember the close calls through the Californian Santa Ana winds,
Arizonian sand storms and Canadian downpours,
even the beautiful Hawaiian Hana Hwy and still coming back alive
Times I didn't conform and ignored everyone telling me how inappropriate I was
Or the fallback, "what kind of mother are you"
But somewhere in the past year I've been wearing them less and less
pulling these out more and more along with sensible sneakers and fuzzy slippers
But lately a little teeny voice begged for these
And when an old friend saw the photo she said
"Aren't those like the ones you had in the 90s?!" (snicker, snicker)
So I defiantly bought them
And when they arrived I put them on and her voice echoed in my head
And I hesitated
Am I just a middle-aged chick trying to hold onto youth?
I didn't think these were 'age appropriate only' footwear
They make me happy, they make me smile
And they sat in the box for a week
Resigned, I finally told myself - leave the 'sexy' to those under 35
And I mailed them back to the store
So as I look down upon my feet and tell good ole sensible shoe
just how much I hate them
my heart feels heavy
~ ~ ~ ~
A funny thing happens when you review your life in shoes
I realize now the mistake I made
I have always ignored the voices of sensibility
of conformity
of gender or age-appropriateness
so why did I choose to listen now?
I told myself I was older, wiser, time to act my age,
don't embarrass The Kid, be an adult
conform, fit in

I just may have to get dream boots back
if I can convince myself I'm not going back in time
if I can convince myself I'm not going back in time
~ ~ ~ ~
When I was cleaning out my closet the other day
I found a pair of stilettos
As in eye-gouging-deadly weapon stilettos
Trying to figure out why I would have these...I remembered
And covered my eyes and blushed
~ ~ ~
Hope you figured out by now this is more about perceptions, change
conformity than it actually has to do with footwear
I'm darned lucky the Universe gives me these physical clues
when it's time to start focusing on how my perceptions
are affecting my physical reality

“You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
And you know what you know.
You are the guy who'll decide where to go.”
Dr. Seuss

What an awesome post!!! I can't believe you sent those boots back!! Mine came the other day and I love them but they don't fit right so I HAVE to send them back!! I will keep looking cuz I'm not giving up on boots!!! I don't care if they're age appropriate or not!! If I can do it, you certainly can!! I never had stilettos and probably not even the reason to blush---but I wish I did!!! I don't think ignoring the voice of sensibility is a mistake!!! Just go for it!
ReplyDeleteI would love to do this with clients! Great idea. Hugs Karen
ReplyDeleteMy shoes tell stories I really wish they DID NOT....*ahem*
ReplyDeleteI have a good deal of the nose-bleed stilettos I modeled in. (wrong size? NO PROBLEM! just shove your foot in!)
In fact, I have soooooo many shoes, a massive purge is due when I am up to the task. Some second hand store is going to get a lot of GOOD SHOES.
Now, BOOTS.
Remember, this is the Ed Hardy socks, Doc Marten wearing 51 year old?
Life was meant to have fun.
And I get more smiles from my shoes than any of my other odd attire.
Go for the wild girl boots. Everything old is new again!
XXOO~~
Anne
P.S. I just remembered, I used to have a set of boot chains that would go on an assortment of Punk gear boots.
ReplyDeleteI wondered what happened to them???
XXOO~~
A.
Oh Pleeze, don't worry about what you will look like in any shoes or boots when you are old because believe me, you have a long ways to go before you are there. Don't cave in before you need to girl! Your son might feel embarrassed by some of your ways now but when he is older he will remember those same things with fondness. Just give him some good memories and have fun! No one ever died from embarrassment!
ReplyDeleteOh my god! Get those boots back! You're a boots girl. Be a boots girl. I think one of the privileges of getting older is to not care what anybody thinks. Live outside the box. It's much nicer out here. ;) Outside the box is where the wind blows in your hair and you can smile and blush and wear kick-ass boots!! Go for it, lady!! :):)
ReplyDeleteMy shoe history is very dull compared to yours! And of course, it goes without saying that I wear sensible shoes and geriatric shoes!
ReplyDeleteA middle aged chic sounds like a contradiction in terms Elena, especially for you..........:)
ReplyDeleteAge starts and finishes in the mind and where the mind goes the body follows......
My footwear now tends to be sandals or training shoes. I have a pair of real shoes I have had forever for when I have the occasional business appointment.
The soul/spirit doesn't care what you wear, it is what you carry with you which can cause the problem.
Bring the sexy boots back !!!
ReplyDeleteIf they make you happy for one minute.
If they make you feel powerful and alive.
If they make you feel like the hot, middle aged biker chick that you have earned the right to be right in this minute !
Life is too damn short to wear shoes that you hate !!!!
And who gives a hoot what "they" think ! ;-)
Love and hugs to you, My Biker Chick Superhero !
Oh Elena! Love your story and photos to "boot"! You just get them and wear them. It's all about feeling good about yourself. They're fun for you. Wear them!
ReplyDeleteMy kids survived my weirdness, although it wasn't footwear and they still love me. I guess my story is over because I don't wear shoes or socks anymore. Well, the weirdness lingers.
ReplyDeleteThe moment my friend tells me my clothes are too young for my size and age, I go out and I get some more. My mother got mad at my sister, for keeping long hair after THIRTY. I am 59 and my hair is beyond my shoulders. When the gray gets on my nerves I change it. And if I like a style, I keep it. And probably that's why I now live alone, but the truth is, I rather like it.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get the boots.
