Love getting together with my family
Mama, sisters, their kids and grandchildren
But I was sick and quietly observed
My sister said something about illnesses being genetic
about once it starts...
And looking around I realized that amongst them
the three young adults have diabetes and epilepsy
every aunt and uncle we've lost has been to cancer
and except for the teens on down
nobody looked really healthy
I felt my spirit droop
I told myself to accept my fate
I've been sick, am sick, and will stay sick
On my silent drive home I felt sick and saddened
to quiet the chatter in my head I chose to listen to an old Abraham-Hicks tape
and heard how illness is an indicator of resistance
ask what subtle but chronic thoughts that now feel normal
have caused the body to throw up the red flag
And I laughed at my silliness
I quickly accepted the idea that I was doomed to illness because it 'runs in the family'
It was like I threw on the cloak of illness
and settled down into a little niche to accept my fate
and mark notches on the wall counting the time left
And yet, why am I not as fast at accepting the other side
In between epileptic seizures, my grandpa farmed and
carved furniture, utensils and coffins in Mexico
My grandma could have been 'Rosie the Riveter' shouting "Yes, We Can"
farming, storytelling, making & mending clothing for the village
And then there's my Dari and Mama...
Creativity. Strength. Grit.
That's the legacy that rings true
and once I stop being a bonehead I'll accept it with open arms

I spoke with my Mama this morning
She said she left dinner sad yesterday
Seeing how her whole family is ill
Afraid that it will crumble once she moves on
I told her about my new revelation
and reminded her that my stubborn streak far exceeds illness
and that I would whip them into shape
She reminded me I was named after my Grandma
and before hanging up told me
"Get out of your own way Elena"

It's funny.
This elder of mine thinks she's humble and uneducated
and yet
I've never met anyone with the strength and wisdom she possesses.

Love what your mama said--get out of your own way! How many of us could heed her wise words. ;)
ReplyDeleteHave a strong, stubborn weekend! :)
The power of positive thinking works.
ReplyDeleteThe power of positive thinking works but so does the power of negative thinking. Reminds me of the story of the old Native American elder, telling the youngster that we all have a pair of wolves inside us, the bad wolf and the good wolf, battling for the soul. Which one wins? the youngster asks. The one you feed, says the elder.
ReplyDeleteOr words to that effect. Feed the positive!
Negativity always seems to be insidious and easy, where as we have to choose positivity and work with it. The biggest obstruction to that, as your Mama so correctly pointed out, is ourselves.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Elena.
I love your Mama! (she's quite wise, so listen....)
ReplyDeleteI have always thought illness of the garden variety around the holidays was brought on more by stress than anything else.
Rest, heal, and find the shining tidbit in each day.
Believe me....that is what I am having to do!
XXOO~~

warm hugs Elena....i pray that whatever illness is bugging u may leave u soon and may health and joy find u and cloak u for long.
ReplyDeleteAnd always remember more than being organic, illness is a state of mind, beat the negative vibe and half the battle with illness is one
You are brilliant. That's all.
