Legacy

My mom and grandmom have a talent for knitting, crocheting, and making clothes. My mom could whip out a whole bunch of doilies while watching the spanish soap operas after work. I thought they were pretty but could never understand the concept of putting them out to get dusty. After giving up on teaching me to cook, my mom sat me down to teach me to make my own doily. I was excited as I worked the yarn around my fingers and needle because I was going to make her proud. She worked along side me as we worked. I noticed mine wasn't looking quite like hers but I kept on. Finally, she was done and so was I. I proudly held up my doily but it wasn't quite right. Instead of the pretty little dainty doily, I had a rather pretty pink sombrero (that hat the Charros or Mariachis wear). Darn.

I smiled as I held my sombrero. She gave me a knuckle to the head and said I was a burra. (A donkey but here it's used to mean rather dumb.)

I was fired...no more doilies for me. I used the sombrero as a peace offering to the hand-me-down Barbie someone gave me that creeped me out.

I still don't know how to knit or cook but today I mounted a doily my mom made and one my grandmom made. I never met my grandmom and it's kinda cool thinking I'm holding something she held. My mom is still alive and I think she'll like to see that I put them together. Now, if that creepy Barbie gives up the sombrero maybe I can mount mine with these. That way my son can show his kids that we don't all have to be perfect. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I bet that Barbie had some wild parties with that hat....
