Back Home

We spent this past week on Drummond Island in Michigan
Hubby, son, my sister and the dogs all bonding and sharing
We're all snug back at home now and I'm enjoying the quiet of the wee hours
Before anyone is awake

My head is still cradled in that peaceful glow that only vacations produce
The images of endless trees, water, and blue skies still clear in my head
I felt gratitude while there; grateful for no signs of development
Grateful that we had an opportunity to take this vacation
Grateful when people greet one another as fellow human beings
Grateful that there are still patches of Mother Nature left untouched
And oh so grateful to see that while most of the people I see back home
may be self absorbed and, well, complete idiots
That all you need do is stand in Nature for one moment to realize
that we do not stand alone on a pedestal above all else
We're part of that whole cycle of life;
part of the earth, sky, trees, wind, water, animals
(I sound like a tree-hugger, huh...well I am)

I sat by the campfire one night with my head as far back as possible
Looking at the enormity of the night sky, watching the shooting stars
and hearing the wolf howls
I felt enormous awe, I felt tiny, and in one strange moment
I connected to a place deep inside and found immense sorrow
Confused I backed away from that and
continued enjoying the vast greatness around me
But the next morning I realized that once you touch that sorrow,
it starts to leak out
So as much as I hate to,
I know I'll have to sit and confront whatever that was sometime soon
But for now, I'm relishing in the memories before they get clouded over

And warning you that you'll probably be subjected to a gazillion tree pics

  1. Welcome home.....physically and mentally!
I have been so far away from that vacation feeling...it is lovely to hear in words.
    And trees are GOOD! ;-)

  2. I am a tree hugger too, if that means loving trees and wild critters too. I look forward to tree photos. Your vacation sounds idyllic.

  3. There is something connective in being out in nature...looking at the stars, or just enjoying the scenery around you -- you feel part of it all and blessed that it is so!

  5. In the big picture, we are little more than overgrown gnats. But in each of our little universes, we can be a powerfully positive being. Hug the ones and the things you love. Without realizing it, you may have inspired my next post. You are significant!

  7. Glad you had a chance to connect with nature. Tree photos? Bring em on! I live in the trees, never tire of them. the sorrow you feel? I feel it too, I believe we are sorrowing over the destruction of our home, Mother Earth. I want to do something to help but it all seems so piddly, anything I can do. But, everything helps. Better than a tiny bit of hurt.
