In talking to a friend I discovered an odd habit; I hardly ever sleep in bed
I wander the house in search of a place to sleep
On the rare occasion that I start in bed; I leave within the hour blaming it on a snoring hubs
But the truth is, I got used to sleeping alone when I was divorced
And so now I wander between the couch, a futon, the floor
But then I remembered being a kid and having the same issue
I wandered the house in search of a place to sleep
It started out that I used to have to share a bed with my brothers or sisters
Then when they moved away, I chose the couch, the floor, the balcony
When things were bad I used to sleep across my Mama's bedroom doorway,
the kitchen or propped near the bathroom...where I could run fast if needed
It all makes me wonder about the funny habits I train myself into
This odd sleeping behavior is probably what's causing me to be so sleepy during the day
This restlessness has become such a part of me that I don't even recognize it anymore
So because I'm so sleepy and thoughts are disconnected
I'll share something I shared with my Artists Way tribe yesterday
As I lay sleeping on the couch, the Harvest moon shone on my face
the words in quotations kept running through my head
until I had to get up and write them down
if I hoped to get any more sleep
~ ~ ~
It whispers in my soul; a calling, a longing for something
Ignored, it becomes louder beckoning; insisting
I tell it to go away
Unable to be contained, It reaches out seeking;
winding along my body, reaching out with tendrils
It wraps and tightens;
I catch my breath; I cannot breathe
Beseechingly I look upon the Harvest moon in silent plea
"As you guided the farmers to bring in their crop,
So too light the way to the harvest in my soul!"
And for a moment the tendrils stop reaching as they wait in anticipation

Did I mention how dramatic I am in the middle of the night?
Heehee
The thing is, as annoying as that restlessness can be, it also pushes my growth.
For now, the hubs has offered to buy me a bed
There's nothing worse than broken sleep and nothing more refreshing than a long night of deep repose.
ReplyDeletePeace!
ReplyDeleteLove what you wrote in the middle of the night! :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like there was a good reason for this restless sleeping to start when you were a child. Maybe if you could gently put that to rest, you could probably sleep better today? Easier said than done, right? I've been working on my own childhood issues for 60 years now--LOL! I am making progress, though. ;)
well one blessing of this restlessness is the time to devote to your creativity...perhaps writing when you cannot sleep will open a door to understanding the restlessness in new ways and eventually allow you to feel safe/comfortable sleeping in one place.
ReplyDeletesomeone's got to do night duty, I guess. But I hope you do find rest for that questing soul. And a good bed ! ;-)
ReplyDeleteHugs !
Oh Elena. By the way, that's what my mother-in-law used to call it - "night duty". Haven't heard that in a long long time.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a whole makeover for the bedroom? If your bedroom was the perfect refuge, place to relax, etc. what would it look like? Hugs Karen
