I've been a bit restless
Being confronted with my Mama's broken tibia and fibula
And a torn rotator cuff making it difficult to use a walker
Not so much because of the injuries but because of what they uncover
We were a tight family with clear cut dynamics
The eldest brother you went to for advice; the sage
The eldest sister you went to for help; the caregiver
Leaving me and my other sister to flutter around under the radar
Then my dad died and the dynamics were shot to hell
Over misunderstandings on how to handle my dad's assets
No will. It being handled as it is in Mexico. You tell the eldest.
He told the eldest daughter.
The family splintered and my Mama was heartbroken.
I'm the youngest and finally called a family meeting and spoke up
The dynamics changed; I wanted to keep fluttering under the radar
But instead was flung to the other end
It's something we don't speak about; what happened back then
But with my Mama sick, I'm noticing the same stirrings in the eldest sister
The resentment, the anger, still twitches under the surface
~
I have always dreaded becoming a caregiver to someone
I hated being left alone with my dad when he was ill
Dreaded the thought of being asked to care for my mother-in-law
but I didn't think twice when I offered to take my Mama home
Perhaps because I don't consider her to be ill; just a temporary disability
And the fears I have of somehow hurting her don't seem too bad
Even my fear of starving her is counteracted by the knowledge
that she'll be teaching me along the way
I haven't quite dealt with the dread of the visitors that will be coming
The group of cousins who thrive on telling me how fat I've become
With that little smirk and glint in their eye
As if I didn't already know it; and heard it from them before
I wonder if I have to let them in
Funny that just knowing what's coming has had me eating things I normally don't
Doughnuts and candy
(And I thought I wasn't an emotional eater, ha!)
While unconsciously fretting over this, I happened across an old post
And realized this is all part of the lesson of learning to love myself
It's ok that my role has changed within the family; it's ok to take charge
It's ok that I'll care for my Mama and it's ok that I don't know how to cook
It's ok that I've gained weight because I think this caring for someone
will teach me how to care for myself
I called a family meeting and told them we need to talk and plan
They've agreed (whew!)
All proving that I'm just being pushed past my comfort zone
And it's ok that I still want to keep the snakes out of my house
But I will no longer hold the resentment and anger at their words
~
“God allows us to experience the low points of life
in order to teach us lessons we could not learn in any other way.
The way we learn those lessons is
not to deny the feelings but to find the meanings underlying them.”

That word that picked me for the year, LOVE, sure means business
~
Lots of challenges coming up. Wow. Relationships can be tricky. You are older and wiser every day. You can do this no problem. With the tables turned and you being thrust out front with the role of taking control on top rather than flying under the radar, it is the perfect opportunity for growth. You DO NOT have to let them in if they are going to hurt you. You are not fat. You are beautiful and don't deserve to hear anything less. Let that be known. You and your mother don't have to put up with anything other than love and support. LOVE and support. The word of the year is LOVE not BS (hee hee). Accept the love don't take the BS.
ReplyDeleteYou're funny. Starving someone? Your kid is still alive, right? He gets fed and watered. Look how awesome he is. You have everything it takes to care take. You are growing an amazing human being right under your own roof every day!!!
You know the saying "God only gives you what you can handle"? Sometimes don't you wish he had a little less faith in some of us?!?!?! ha ha ha ha! He sure knows how to dish it!
You'll do great!!!!
Noticed your comment on my blog and thank you for leaving it and why would I mind??!! Just glancing through your blog my eyes landed on a previous post where your hubby said you couldn't be controlled - HA that is certainly true for me as well, but because we can't be controlled means we, in fact have super willpower. Which in turn makes us FREE.....oh and I also did The Artits Way years ago (I am only ahead of you b/c I am 53 - my big change began in my early 40's)
ReplyDeleteWithout change we cannot grow.
You really are facing up to all the challenges in your life!! You have a warrior heart!! And those evil cousins who call you fat.....I'd give them ONE visit, and if they can't bring something positive to the situation....they're done....no more visits!! They make me think of the evil stepsisters in Cinderella!! And guess who gets to be Cinderella!!!!
ReplyDeleteThere is only the continually learning and renewing Elena, who accepts who she is and the challenges she faces. The old under the radar Elena disappeared when the new Elena decided it was time to move on with who she wanted to be in life. There is no hiding place from your true self.....
ReplyDeleteFamily dynamics are so difficult sometimes, aren't they? Been there, done that, know what it's like. Be strong!
ReplyDeleteHi Elena. Sorry about your mom. It's good that you will be caring for her. I wish I could get my mom to come over here but at 88 she still wants to be on her own and it's getting to that poing where she is starting to have a hard time getting around. I was going over there and staying there if you remember last year when problems arose but she decided she did not want to leave her home. There are others too who help her out but if she would only agree to come and stay with us, it would make things a lot easier. Hats of too you for doing what you are doing. Take care and don't worry too much.
ReplyDeleteThis would be a good time for mama to teach you how to make a few dishes. She can sit in the kitchen (you do have one don't you?) and tell you what to do. Make sure you take notes.
ReplyDeleteWhat an inspired post.Family dynamics are changing for me too, but for different reasons. My wise son is getting married in two weeks and has had little time for the rest of the family a minor problem but one with bad timing as I have become house bound due to nuerological problem and am currently being evaluated for a brain tumor. Having had multiple medical problems and being able to deal with them and pretty well take care of myself I'm afraid this is going to really throw my family in to a real growth cycle. My word for the year is Healing and as I have watched the new growth of spring I have pondered the new growth that will happenn in my family and in myself. Thanks so much for your positive attitude and thought that you shared I really needed it today. One of the great things about blogging is you never know who's life you will touch

You know when I say "Love is the answer to every question." ? Well, it came to me so cleary when I read this post. It made me think "How can Love be applied in Elena's world right now ?" Well, you can love yourself through the hard feelings that are coming up about how you feel about yourself and about your role in the family. You can so love your Mom through the process on needing to lean on you like she hasn't really every need to before. And you can Love the process, the life lessons that you are being given and all that they are teaching you about Love.
ReplyDeleteOh, and you can accept the Love from those who Love you, as you make your way through the journey.
See what I mean ? Love is the answer to every question, my friend. And yes, it sure has chosen you !
