Questions

I'm hoping someone has information on the following:

1) Can you recommend photo software that would allow me to manipulate digital photos i.e play with the coloring, sepia, zoom, etc.?

2) I'm trying to develop my new garden. Do you know of a source that provides free cuttings or transplants? Small fee would be ok too.
3) Can you recommend a bird book that we can use to identify the various birds that have been visiting us? Something simple so my son and I can use it.

4) Many, many years ago I found an old salvage store on 18th street that had vintage style items (found a wonderful leather hat box). Unfortunately, they moved long ago. Does anyone know of any great salvage stores with unique finds in the Chicago/Burbs area? You know, the type that feels like you're treasure hunting in an old attic.

5) Does anyone know how this is created? Is it fused glass? Other method?

  1. Hello. I do think the glass is fused glass.
I use Photoshop for photo manipulation. If you are looking for something more basic, and free, download Picassa from the google people. It will keep track of your photos, and let you do some manipulation like cropping and sepia tones, as well as a variety of other effects. I find it pretty easy to use.
Sorry I can't help with the other questions.

yes its fused glass, you cut the shapes and then place/stack them on one another in a kiln (no glue so you have to move them carefully) and then fire it. There are also molds where you can send a piece like the one pictured through the kiln a second time and make stuff like bowls from a flat piece.

    www.whatbird.com
I don't know any specific books, but the search function of this site is amazing. You can restrict the search by region, state, beak shape, size, color and many more. Each one narrows doing the results until you are left with the birds that fit what you remember about the bird you saw.
Also I remember for a while when we were younger my mom had drawn pictures of the birds that we commonly saw out the window and put them up on the wall by the window with the feeder, and this helped us to recognize the regulars.

I haven't heard much from people about picasa from google, and I use photoshop for all my editing things. If you are use to using photoshop for things, or want a fairly sophisticated tool for free I would suggest
http://www.gimp.org It is stuppose to be like free photoshop. I've never used it but I haven't heard any major complaints with it other than maybe not knowing what you are doing if you're new to photo editing software.
[This article] lists free photo editors for windows computers, and picasa is at the bottom, but it could easily work for what you want/need.

  4. Hi Elena,
I too use Photoshop and my daughter (who is a photographer) wouldn't use anything else.

  5. I too would like to find some second hand/antique shops. There are some in old Orland, but I haven't been there and also there's one now in New Lenox on Cedar Road. I will try to get there and let you know. I have lots of bird books and, besides the regular ones like Stokes, Nat'l Geographic, etc., I do like "Birds of Chicago" by Fisher and Johnson and I do love my hardcover "Reader's Digest North American Wildlife". They are probably the ones that I refer to most. I can bring them to art class if you want to see them.

  6. Hi Elena,
Photoshop is my tool of creative expression as well. Have fun exploring these various media tools. They've helped push me past my perceived artistic boundaries and soooo much fun!
I do a lot of Good will shopping. Love the glass vintage bottles I find there. Good for still life painting projects!

  7. In early May, the Lemont Garden Club has a sale of perenniels that they dig up from their gardens at reasonable prices. you might want to check garden clubs in your area.
