Quest within my quest

First I must apologize if it seems I'm not leaving comments on your blogs
I seem to be having trouble doing so; some go through some don't
Maybe that's why I've seen a dip in comments here
Or I'm just being too morbid lately (hee hee!)
~ ~ ~ ~
So I've been thinking of launching a quest (within my usual Quest)
I'm determined to find happiness
Not for myself
I've been surrounded by so much doom and gloom that I can't seem to remember
if happiness really does exist in the world

I'm having trouble describing this so please bear with me
I seem to be caught in the whirlpool thinking of "what's it all for"
I've watched and listened as calls or visits come in for my Mama
where it becomes a comparison of illnesses
an update of who is dying or hit bad times or whatever

From my vantage point it all seems like a death march
Does aging really just lead to this?
Sitting in a wheelchair in a nursing home staring at a wall?
Or having breakfast with your friends comparing symptoms?

My family teases me about my 'no news in the house' rule
I tell them all it does is poison the air
But they all live for the news and it has infiltrated my once peaceful home
I feel like the air is thick and I can't breathe

I ask my Mama if this is all there is
She says they're opportunities for growth
I see them more as suffocating
Like sand on a fire

Thus I feel a need to search out happiness
Not just the small windows of sunshine that fall upon a person
But somewhere out there must be someone who is truly happy
Who is aging and happy
Who doesn't count the days by what's on the news or by medications

As for the kid?
I'm tempted to let him go and be part of a more sensible family unit
Or atleast a family with both feet on the ground
For now I'm sending him with his dad for a month
My Mama may be back home by then
And I can hit the road in search of happiness
or at the least find myself again

I received this message today from Tut.com

How adventurous would life be, Elena, if you were "challenge free"?
If you had the perfect body, perfect self-esteem, everyone adored you,
and you won the lottery every Sunday?

Not.

Now what if, painful as they may temporarily be,
you could choose a life during which challenges might arise
whenever your thinking needed expansion,
on the sole condition that every one of them
could be overcome no matter how daunting they may at first seem?

Everything makes you more,

The Universe
~~
So perhaps I don't have to travel far
Perhaps I just can't see through the murkiness right now

  1. Elena, I think the *no news* rule is excellent. It is proven in studies that WHAT WE HEAR affects HOW WE FEEL. (actually, I think that is just a good dose of common sense)
There are older people who are happy; and they usually are creative people, or those who are busy and have things to occupy their mind OTHER THAN ILLNESS.
While I do not consider myself *old* yet, I am older than you and I know which people I talk to that will read the litany of symptoms and which will start talking about art or other creative ventures...or just fun things.
    Seek it out.
    It's there.
We are what we make ourselves, and being happy? I think society can't stand to see happy people. I really do....
But me, well, I'm too nuts to know any different, and I am HAPPY! Right here, in the state I'm in---it's all good.
Oh, and blogger has been WICKED about not letting people comment. I am copying this before trying to post...just in case!

    XXOO~~

  2. I know EXACTLY what you mean about life feeling like a death march. When I begin to feel like that the thought is always "Go to work, wash the dishes, wash the clothes, rinse, repeat". Ugh. Spiritless and devoid of inspiration. To get out of that negative spiral I start reading my blog list, honestly, and yours is one of them. You and other blogs like yours reintroduce a sense of adventure in me. So, thank you.

I know your son wanting to leave really hurts, but remember he's just a kid. I think going on another adventure would really help, just as throwing myself into something I'm passionate about helps me deal with only seeing my boy two weekends a month.

I heart you! Sending you a big hug.

  3. Sometimes the negative gets overwhelming, no? Can't watch the news without horror stories. Can't drive without people getting bent out of shape. There is happiness out there. Sometimes you just have to look for it! And oh how the search is worth every minute!!!!

    Just for you Darling.
    Some happy old people!

  4. Your mama is wise, calling them "opportunities for growth." I have some older friends in their mid eighties who exercise with me in a warm water pool at the spa, and these ladies are great inspirations as they persevere and keep active, live in their own homes and condos, keep active in their churches, etc.
When I walk in to the spa I feel more light and when I am done exercising I feel uplifted, by the ladies and by those "endorphins". Are you exercising? I also walk in my neighborhood which I also recommend as a break. Best wishes to you.

  5. Rock on Mama! Happiness is trarsitory, it comes and it goes and it is also a question of perspective. Cast your mind back to when you thought you were going to lose your Mom, remember the feeling at the time, then imagine at that time you could see the future (now), how would you have felt? Would you have been happy to have it?

  6. These are questions we must all ask and think about. Too many people run away from them.

P.S. Blogger is being a pain in the ass for everyone right now. That's what's causing the comments issue.
