Hummingbird

I’ve mentioned being raised Catholic but I had pulled away from the Church and almost given up on believing in anything spiritual. I became caught up in such negative thinking that I solely lived with regret focused on the past and dreading the future. My outlook was bleak since I felt I was in a never-ending trap of sitting in traffic, going to work, sitting in traffic, coming home, going to bed. While at the library one day looking for a book on tape, I grabbed something on Law of Attraction. I was hooked and it was interesting how one topic led to another and just seemed to fall into my lap.

My spiritual growth started in the summer of 2008 with the hummingbirds. While vacationing with my mom and sisters in Aug 2008, I casually swatted at a bee buzzing near my ear. My mom stared at me and said there was a hummingbird hovering near my ear. It insisted until I got up and left.

A few weeks later while vacationing in the North Woods I quietly questioned everything I had been learning about God, guides, angels and asked for a sign. As I sat in the tent meditating I saw a shadow cross the window so I stood up to look out. A beautiful green & red hummingbird hovered in front of me. We were less than a foot apart, separated by the window screen. He hovered for several minutes while we stared at each other. Of course by the time we came home I was devouring everything I could about meditation and spirituality. I saw this little hummingbird once more during a guided meditation class. Of course I still see them around my home but they’re not the green & red ones and it doesn’t “feel” the same. I’ve since read that hummingbirds represent messengers. This little messenger woke me to the existence of more than meets the eye. I found this explanation in rainbowcrystal.com:

“Its physical lightness serves as a powerful reminder for us to lighten up. When we are heavily burdened with worries and fears our spirits cannot soar. The hummingbird is unique in that it can fly not only forward, but backward and sideways. It also has an unusual hovering pattern, and can move its wings in a figure eight pattern – a symbol for infinity. This flying pattern also has meaning for us. So often, we find ourselves stuck in time, lost in regret about or longing for the past, or hoping (often without much true hope) that the future will be better. Hummingbird shows us how to re-visit the past for the purpose of releasing it instead of being caught in a permanently backward flight pattern. It also helps us to see that if we step aside we may see our life differently. Hummingbird teaches us to transcend time, to recognize that what has happened in the past and what might happen in the future is not nearly as important as what we are experiencing now. It teaches us to hover in the moment, to appreciate its sweetness, to drink deeply of the nectar of life.”
