I've been laying low from posting here because I didn't want it to be all doom & gloom. Then I remembered my original intention of being honest so if someone ever feels they're the only ones thinking the way they do they can see they're not alone. I spent a long time thinking so and trying to hide so much so that I lost my sense of self. I'm now trying to find me again.
This restless period is a dangerous one. It reminds me of the wandering cowboy in movies who can't put down roots and is always riding off in search of goodness knows what. Thankfully I have my son in school and that has grounded me. Otherwise I'd be on the moto now halfway to Arizona chasing, or being chased, by self-made demons. I've been tempted to call the ex and ask him to watch my son long enough for me to run. But it's not fair to either of them. So thankfully my senses are still in control.
Before my bday I researched various art classes then decided not to pursue them. I've been searching unsuccessfully for an art league or meditation group near me. I can't define what I want so that I can attract it to me. So I suppose all these dead ends finally took their toll. I decided to quit dabbling in art and buckle down. I sent out the resume although everything inside warned not to. I don't want the position but I can't stand not knowing what I want. So this seemed easier.
Then I started getting all these little signs. Somehow I had to meet Bev at the art fair even thought I didn't know where it was. Somehow I found it and her. Her joy and love of art was contagious. Then I met the instructors for each of the three classes I was researching. Weird huh - that they were all there. Then I met a kid who thanked me for actually taking time to look at his photos and after I bought one excitedly told me I was his first sale in his first art fair. He's still in school, due to graduate soon.
I was still insisting on having nothing to do with art. And the more determined I became the worse I felt. I started noticing that my surroundings were looking like I felt inside. The house looks neglected, the flowers look sad, the dog is moping around, my son is watching me with side glances, I'm overdosing on sweets, trying to pick fights with hubby and I'm not sure why.
Then I opened "Walking in this World" by Julia Cameron and found the answer:
"The human being, by definition, is a creative being....When we lose interest in ourselves and our lives, when we tell ourselves our dreams don't matter or that they are impossible, we are denying our spiritual heritage. When we do this, we become depressed and drained, even physically ill. We become snappish, irritable, high-strung. We call ourselves neurotic-this is not the case. We are not neurotic, we are miserable-miserable because we have stifled our creative selves.
"Instead of making art, we make trouble-and we make it because we are bingeing emotionally on not making art."
"Keep the drama on the page, the stage, the canvas, the film"
~~~~~~
And it hit me...my family and environment isn't doing anything wrong. I can run across the world, change jobs, hubbies, houses and peace and happiness will still elude me because the discontent is inside me. And, simply, my mind is quiet and content when I'm creating. My family, house, garden, waist line, are all happy when my mind is quiet and content.
Thank goodness Laura's class is starting soon.
Oh we need to connect babe! Been there felt that and i'm sure we will again but being that creative being that we are we're meant to be happy so hang on we are going to have fun. Instant happiness is hard to find and keep so we have to work at it like the rest of the stuff.
ReplyDeletewell I quite babbling.
see you soon
Elena, I have been in the Artist's Way group at the Center for over 5 yrs. now and I highly recommend it!! I also have been following the on-line Artist's Way group led by Laura and recently yours is always the first blog I read!! I can so relate to how you are feeling. I too continue to search, to strive to be creative but it's always a struggle for some reason. This is in spite of the fact that nothing makes me happier than being creative!! I don't know why it's such a struggle but it is!!
ReplyDeleteI always seem pulled in too many directions! Anyway, I know many of the same people that you do and I hope to meet you someday!!! Hang in there!!!!
Hi Elena,
ReplyDeleteI, like Robin, always come to your blog first. It is always honest, speaks to my own heart and I learn. I appreciate you not holding back with your authentic self.
Each of us is on our own path, at different places. I know that restless feeling you are speaking of. It is not dangerous, rather (to me) it is realizing that the old ways do not fit any longer. I feel it is spirit knocking on your door (and creativity = spirit, for me).
When I met you at the fair, I felt your joy. It's always there really, just the life layers can hide it.You don't have to find you, it's within you always.
It's great that you question, my friend. I hope to one day spend more time with you. You are special!
P.S. Hey Robin neat you left a comment here. So love to hear your thoughts.
P.S.S. Elena, Laura's class will be fun. can't wait to see how your creativity blossoms.....
There's an old quote but not sure who by. When you are ready to learn the teacher will appear. Kind of fits in with what you are saying. Sounds like you made a huge leap forward. Gotta love Julia Cameron. She helps me all the time.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your kind words. They give me hope - that I'm not losing my mind.
ReplyDeleteRobin, welcome and thanks for posting. Do you realize how good it feels to know I'm not the only one who feels like this? I was actually thinking of joining that Artists Way class. Sounds that perhaps I should.
Hi Elena! Just wanted to mention that I am in the Tuesday morning AW group at the Center. We are currently not using the Julia Cameron books as we have done them all (some more than once!). Linda Whittaker always picks wonderful books that encourage growth, even if they don't deal directly with art. They are all about finding your true path in life and finding (and doing) what makes you happy and fulfilled. The best part of the group is the discussion and hearing other peoples "take" on things. It's a very safe group where we feel we can say most anything. And some of the women are soooooo wise! They have been searching and learning far longer than me!! Anyway, I just wanted to put in a plug for Tuesday mornings!! Take care!!
ReplyDeleteI felt so sad reading your post... I thought you were giving up on us! Sounds like a ton of synchronicity and the path is laid out waiting for you to learn and grow! Good news. Change is never easy, but acceptance always makes the transition smoother.
