Every Friday we used to have meetings where all the project managers would gather round the table to report on the status of their projects. The goal was to listen and filter out the information that would most affect your project and apply it accordingly. But you could also learn alot about the person from the manner in which they spoke; picking up on those who are legends in their own mind, drama queens, fearful or strong. The key was to listen then look beyond the exterior distractions to the person's core. By doing so, I was able to work quite well with all personalities.
I suppose that could also apply to self. To become skilled at listening to the distractions in your mind and then look past them at what's really going on. To be supportive, respectful, or patient with yourself. As tempting as it was to choke some of those people I worked with, it wouldn't have made things easier. On the contrary, the person would have lashed out or drawn inward making it impossible for the successful completion of my project. So I suppose beating myself up wouldn't draw different results.
And as I woke up this morning I started thinking how different my life has become. I've moved from being constantly under work pressure, in meeting after meeting, and always surrounded by the crankiest people to being alone surrounded by my son, hubby, nature, and the dogs. At first I relished the silence. Then slowly I became restless and started feeling useless. Now I'm understanding the importance of balance; of needing time alone as well as time with others. I think it's necessary to growth. To know how my 'life project' relates to the others'.
My supervisor used to end those meetings with
"that's it...Onward!...to build and create".
So that's what I'm doing as I balance along my path.
Onward!
(and don't forget to play nice with others ~ but most importantly....yourself)

ReplyDeleteYep, this relationship with the self is definitely the most complicated one. When I can remember to treat myself like I would a dear friend instead of how I would treat a pain in the butt person, I have a much better day...
