What's right or wrong is a matter of perception, isn't it? The belief system you are raised with perhaps? I may not understand Jehova Witness' teachings (my brother), and have a feeling there is more to my own Catholicism that I've yet to uncover, and am intrigued by the dozens of religions out there. But one thing I'm not ashamed to admit to is that, just like with everything else, I can't be pigeon-holed into one belief. I think in their basic forms, they are all right. My belief. (It's my quest after all)
But having been raised Catholic, I still have that inborn fear that hides in the shadows of my mind that says I will be punished for questioning. I will be punished for believing in other things. In other words, I'll burn in hell forever being poked at by devils with pitchforks. And yet, I have to follow what feels right. I stopped attending mass when I was frustrated that my mouth was reciting prayers and songs by heart without my realizing I was half way through the service. I didn't feel anything. I was a zombie in a pew. A year later I went back and it was like nothing had changed.
I walk through the woods, or even my garden and my heart soars. I find myself thanking God for giving me a chance to live. I talk to Him (nonstop) about my desire for others to feel the same. I feel. It feels right.
And yet, I ran across something today that made me stop. Something that referred to New Age beliefs as the work of the devil. How the belief in angels and spirit guides are just a guise to entrap you. How believing that God is part of us all is another deceit. Don't get me started on healing, invoking light for protection, stones or whatever. Let me just say that a quarter of the way through the document I felt like I wanted to crawl back to church to beg the priest to hide me in the confessional.
And yes, I believe in guides and angels. When I was working and still believing God was vengeful, I used to think of Him as a CEO. He was busy and because He loved us He wanted to make sure He was still approachable. So He created angels and guides as middle managers. We went to them to intercede for us. If it was major, then it called for a conversation with God directly. (See what happens when you work too much?) I don't believe that anymore. I think they're all around....out of love.
But add this to something my Mama mentioned. About feeling like someone was lying behind her in bed; even feeling a heartbeat at her shoulder blade...well it leaves me wondering what's real or not.
So please don't be shy...I really want to know your thoughts. And if you wish to remain anonymous just email me.

The family and I were watching a comedy show the other day where they were playing a Murder Mystery game; a classic Whodunit. A woman picked out a card and said she didn't want to be that character because it scared her. She was "Voodoo Mama Juju".
My son's eyes widened and he and hubby laughed as they pointed at me
"You're Voodoo Mama Juju!"
Fear and control (Church) are no match for love and nurturing (the great Eternal spirit)!
ReplyDeleteDoubt and Questioning are our best friends and guides on the spiritual path. Any organization that tells you differently just wants to control you. There's my opinion!
ReplyDeleteWhe I was about 19, I started having these horrible pre-sleep nightmares about death. Now I realize they were kind of panic attacks but mostly they came from the fear of not knowing what came after that last breath left my body...
ReplyDeleteSo I started to build my own "religion". I researched (luckily I was at school at the time, and could take philosophy/theology/history classes up the wazoo.), I tried out a couple of "churches", and searched my heart and my soul and I built a foundation of belief that helped those feelings of fear go away. I found Faith.
My faith and my "religion" have undergone challenges and changes and adaptations many times in the past 25 years or so, growing and changing as I have grown and changed faced life's big challenges.
But the Faith remains.
Faith in Love as the answer to every question.
Why am I here ? To Love
What is the best way to live my life ? In Love
What awaits me when I leave my body behind in this world, and take my last breath?
Love, sweet Child of Light, Love.
Yep, you guessed it.
Love is my religion.
And in Love, I have Faith.
Peace and love to you, Beautiful Seeker Woman.
I tried to answer this. I really tried. I can't seem to fit it all in this tiny box! I would love to join an open discussion on this subject. I really enjoy exploring and discussing religion/spirituality as long as all involved remain respectful, curious and caring.
ReplyDeleteI do not consider myself religious but I am very spiritual.
I dont like to push my beliefs either and each to his own...I was raised Catholic too and turned my back on it years ago. All of life is about balance but the Catholic religion isn't balanced at all. It's male dominant and us women are made to feel as if we are 'evil' and no good. Woman..Eve.. created the first sin by taking the apple from the tree and therefore man was thrown out of Eden .... Mary Magdalene was portrayed as a prostitute..not a nice woman None of the bible stories have women "heroes" All the major stories are about men. Where would men be without women to birth them? I know how you feel though feeling as if you'll burn in 'hell' it takes a long time to 'unlearn' something you've been taught from a young age. I've been questioning the catholic religion since I was a teen! Its easy now but it took me a LONG time to make the decision that it wasn't for me and I didn't believe their teachings.
ReplyDeleteYour angels will guide you to whats best for you :) and you can email me ANY time and I'll always reply..might not be a lot of help but I'll do my best lol
No one can tell you what to believe, just remember you have to enter heaven like a little child.
ReplyDeleteOh I waited a day to response to this...always stirring up the pot of good thoughts are you Elena? Finding what fits for the indiviual is the journey...some find it early, some take a life time to do that..but just when you think you have it...you start sharing it like you know what's best for others and then they try to hook you to join up..(talking about those who that believe their way is the only way) I've come to the beleif that as many people are walking this planet that's how many beautiful ways there are to believe..and if you think of a tipi how you need the poles to reach up to the sky to support each other and how they circle around to create a wonderful center it's truly amazing in itself isn't it. I honor each others path for what do I know if it's the best for everyone.
