Then I remembered that last night I found a class reunion photo on Facebook with several of my grammar school classmates. It was strange to see how much older they look-and yet the same. Later I felt a familiar twinge of always being the outsider. I was so damned shy. I wondered if I were to do it all over again, would it be different. Would I be friends with these people? And I thought, nope, not interested in friends.
Then I remembered that I never called my friends for the holidays. It's not like it would have taken alot of time; there are only three. And I only see them maybe once every two years or so. But as fast as the thought came, it went. And it occurred to me that Wed night is a meeting with the women's club in town. I've avoided the meetings and now one of my neighbors is driving me in with her. I guess they've figured out I won't go otherwise.
And I refocused on the radio as I took my hand away from the controls. Hmmm, perhaps they're onto something there. Why do I refuse to make friends? The closest I've come to friends are bloggers and those I see in drawing class. Oh boy I sound pathetic huh. But I'd rather have it that way. Why?
Then hubby came home looking really bad. He had gone to visit his best friend in the hospital. They've found a tumor in his spine and hubby is really upset. They grew up together, he served in 'Nam with his brother, they're tight. And as he was talking I found myself thinking that I didn't understand his extent of hurt for a friend. I understand hurt for family. Don't get me wrong; I think it's horrible when things happen to people I don't even know. But he is so hurt. And I think he saw it in my eyes. Because he stopped talking and tried to change the subject. He does everything for me; so the least I could do is listen and be there for him.
So I apologized. And said I don't understand why I can cry during abused animal commercials but be so dry-eyed when it comes to friends. Instead of crying, I get angry. Anger towards the situation causing the hurt in someone. And I realized that this message of friends may be so that I can provide the proper support that my hubby seems to need. I don't have a clue how but I figure all I have to do is be there to listen and maybe provide a hug.
Ugghh, I'm an ice queen! How horrible is that. Not only don't I want to take the time to make friends, now I don't even know how to act for hubby. I suppose it's time to try opening up to some flesh and blood friends. I'll go to that meeting tomorrow and try to mingle. Perhaps it's what I need to start melting the block of ice around my heart.
The radio show ended with the woman saying
that traveling a journey of self discover is not for the faint of heart.
Sometimes it takes alot of guts to face the ugliness within.

Elena,
ReplyDeleteLittle do you know how your journey helps me.... I have many people that I see daily espeically in classes but there are only a few that I can trust totally with all my heart. And I long for more friendship too. This has come up many times with a few of my girl buddies.(who I don't see often enough) What you have with the hubby is a rare thing and the men folk from my observation deal with things much differently then we women folk, and I know from my experience they are as if not more senstive then we are but don't like to show it and yes to just listen to them is so important... That's the base for communication and a good relationship is listening which Spirit knows I need help with. For me the friends I mainly keep are the committee going on in my head all the time and when it come to listening I've got to quiet them down. But back to the women folk... it's an issue that I think personally alot of us have...I surely don't want to be what is being portrayed out there now for the younger gals about the cat fight shit going on... Really lets be good people... well you can see it's pulled a string on my sweater... loving you from a far sister Hummingbird.

Hey, ditto. I believe many women give up their friends when they marry and take on their husbands friends. It's that giving nature that rebounds against us. I have issues making friends as I don't have time to nurture relationships, I was very hesitant making friends with the blog tribe, but it's so wonderful to be able to share all the feelings we go through on our journey.
ReplyDeleteHmmm---friendship---always a tough one for some reason. I've been terribly shy my whole life but have gotten past a lot of it in the last few years---still have some very shy "parts" tho. My oldest dearest friends live far away so that's also tough. But bottom line, for some of us---opening up, being vulnerable to potential hurts is just too risky---takes a LOT of courage!! And investing time in making friends is hard too, especially if (like me) you tend to crave solitude!! It's a delicate line to walk. Not sure at all where I'm going with this---seem to be rambling. It's just that your words hit close to home (as usual!). I plan to take Lois H.'s drawing class this time so maybe I will see you there???
ReplyDeleteyou shy ?
ReplyDeleteI had no idea at all....and certainly not to that extent. reading what you wrote broke my heart...it really did. i wanted to reach right into my screen and give you a hug.
you are beautiful and write with such passion and intelligence and warmth and you even swear....I'd put you in the perfect friend category...in fact I already had.
so mingle with these other women....like I do....and walk away thinking that wasn't so bad...and if in that group there is even ONE person that has something in common with you...some connection...take her phone number....you might need it someday.
BUT....if you walk away thinking "I have more in common with my blogger friends than any of these women...well then, you are so much more than normal in the friendship department"
