Feeling Creative Friday - Well...why not!

So what's this post have to do with creativity you ask? Well, it's about creative ideas.
About letting yourself dream big...no matter how silly it may seem.

My son isn't a big smiler and he's usually cranky when I pick him up from school. So I knew something was up when he got into the car with a grin and the words tumbled over each other as he exclaimed "We're forming a band!". So my response was "Cool, I'm in!" Which of course was met with a scrunched grin and a "Ma, you already have your own band" (my virtual band consists of anyone he deems to be too old for his). So anyway he goes on to say that he and three friends have decided to form a band and they're starting practice at our house next week. I say ok, you could have the basement. But as he talks I find out the other guitarist has never picked up a guitar. The drummer has no drums. And the fourth, who knows. I offered to be singer but again was reminded I have 'my own band'. Hmmppfffhhh......I want a real band.

As I sit at his guitar lesson listening to him pluck at the chords I realize he's only two months into lessons and already has big dreams. He plans on teaching the other guitarist. He plans on buying drums with his allowance. He has named his band. And my heart aches as he asks "do you think it'll fail before we even start?" And I want to say 'it's too soon for you to start a band' because I don't want him to be crushed. But then I realize this is his creativity blossoming; his dreams unfolding like new butterfly wings. And I'm there to watch with one eye closed as he takes his first steps. So why not? I tell him to go for it. And if this band doesn't work out like he wants he can change things along the way. I'll bake cookies and call the other moms.

And I was proud that I caught myself before I became his creativity blocker (and then he'd have to do the Artist's Way as an adult). And I smiled as the phone rang and they made plans. Even if they never gather to practice, they have this moment of excitement. And it's so cool!

But it got me to wondering. About a really really silly idea of mine. So silly I've never mentioned it to anyone because I'm too embarrassed. But some of the comments to my previous post about weight loss brought it to mind and since I'm on a 'feed the dreams' role here, I'll 'voice' it. When I first started learning to ride, I saw a photo in a Harley magazine where a girl was sitting on the curb next to her bike. There was such a look of sexy quiet strength in her face and I've since dreamed of having a similar photo of me and my bike. Conceited? Yeah, probably. Sexy? Only a miracle. But for some stupid reason I feel like I need to do it. So now I'm telling myself  'well...why not!" And this can be my inspiration to lose weight.

And perhaps by doing so I'll develop that look of quiet strength. And have a cool photo that my great grandchildren can look at and say 'grandmama was so strong'....and it would inspire them to achieve their dreams. Because they don't need to know I was all screwed up inside, right?

So, thank you for all the wonderful comments to my weight loss post
I have a doc appointment in two weeks - Miki, it's your turn to call
Silke, I now have a source of inspiration (albeit silly-but whatever works, right?)
Anne, you'd make one 'hot mama' cheerleader
Suz, God does make housecalls
And crazy lady Beth, you can't make me hike the hill
But I'd be honored if you'd take my photo when I'm ready

See what happens when you go through menopause?
You go nuts

  3. OH! OH! Now I have to make my DH buy me a bike so I can have my portrait done on one! (and hell will be frozen solid when that happens)
    Ya ROCK Elena!!!
As to your son and the band (from an old Punk who played bass...hands are gone); some of the best bands and best learning experiences come from people just jumping in and DOING it. Because they figure out their own style, they don't know the "supposed-to's" of life or music, and they generally grow with the experience.
The only thing I suggest for you is earplugs..... ;)
I'm not even sure I can lift my one Schecter bass anymore....old fart in training...sigh!

    XXOO!!

  4. Ahh Elena, you are on such a great path!! And don't you just love the unbridled enthusiasm of kids. They really know how to dream---too bad we seem to lose that along the way. But he is lucky to have a mama who is brave enough and strong enough to follow HER dreams!! You are such a wonderful example for him. Keep it up girl!! I can't wait to see that photo!!

  6. There you go! Inspiration has hit!! It never matters what it looks like, when it arrives, you know it! I personally love your inspiration and can't wait to see the photo!! ;)

And I love that you are so aware of the creative process that you allow your son to move ahead full steam. I think all the good bands are that way because of their passion first, skill second. I can actually think of some famous singers who weren't really the best singers, but they sang from the heart! More power to him and to you for allowing him to do this!!

    Love, Silke

  7. Even if he never plays a gig, he'll always have fond memories of the time he spent working on a dream. And kudos on finding motivation, hope you hang that picture where you'll see it everyday!
