The parish priest was a regular visitor coming a couple times a year to bless our home. It was haunted. But every night I was thankful not to personally see or hear anything. My brother and Mama were the lucky ones. I figured it was haunted by the bad vibes of the bad stuff happening in real life. So I wasn't too scared.
Then I got married and lived in the apartment above my in-laws. My husband worked nights so I was always alone with the new puppy. Everything was fine until I started having the same dream night after night for a few weeks. It was always the same horrible woman in a long dress with high collar at the top of the apartment's front stairs. She had pushed a little boy down the stairs and was watching him roll down. Each night I saw just a little more of the ending. I dreaded going to sleep.
One night the dream extended to my seeing the little boy in a crumpled heap. I could hear her laughing at the top of the stairs as she looked down. Then she turned to look at me. And I was horrified and woke up screaming. Things changed after that. The apartment felt wrong. The puppy refused to cross the doorway into the bedroom. I moved all the furniture into the second bedroom and started sleeping on the couch closer to the front door. The dreams stopped but I started hearing small child like footsteps. Finally I felt a small tiny caress on my cheek one evening. It wasn't scary...just very sad.
We moved soon after that. In talking to my husband's family one day they confirmed that yes strange things happened upstairs. Grandma had seen a woman go into the back bedroom. My husband said he saw a woman's long skirt at the doorway, just no torso. Said he didn't tell me because he didn't want to scare me. Told him I already was...from the barrage of dreams.
So anyway...
Happy Halloween
Ghouls be gone
Bring on the candy

Spooky and scary! You're right -- focus on the candy tonight instead! Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteA great story and definately spooky.
ReplyDeleteWOW! Seriously interesting encounter through the medium of dreams.
ReplyDeleteI lived in what had been a funeral home (did not know it when we bought it...) and there were many times I heard walking down the upstairs hall......I am sure spirits lingered.
When we stayed in New Orleans, we chose the room Johnny Thunders died in. Never had bad things happen, but anything lost would be returned. Always left a card in the room, RIP, to remember him......I think spirits know what we feel.
XXOO~~♥
The Old Witch
Oh Elena, that must have felt very scary.
ReplyDeleteSupposedly if you tell the spirits to go towards the light it helps.
Happy Halloween!!
oh my gosh......i give you all the credit in the world for continuing to live in that apartment!! i think i would have slept with garlic around my neck....oh wait, i guess that's for other ghosts and ghoulies.....but anyway, i was always the biggest scaredy cat when it came to spooky stories on halloween. i've always strictly been in it for the the chocolate.....
ReplyDeletesleep tight tonight, sweetie pie! xoxo, :))
Oh your a good story tell Elena, glad you posted this and wrote it down..you should save it and keep a good collection of them and dress the part at the family gatherings and start the telling, can I say i see that for you in our future...but who am I...
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy the tale... I'd be throwing holy water everywhere! And then I'd tell them they must leave. And then I might hide under the covers until dawn.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great story, and a great story for Halloween! Having the puppy was a good thing. I feel sorry for the little boy.
ReplyDeleteAwesome story. Poor little kid though. I hope he has been able to pass over since
