Just begin, they said

Early this year when I met my first 'live' blogger, Lisa, she wowed me with this thing called journalling. I sat there amazed at her creations as she encouraged me to "just begin"...

Then I met my second blogger, Beth, who selflessly opened her heart and home to me and gave me a blank journal so that I could "just begin"...

Then my rebellious art mentor suggested "Anne-tangles" as she calls them. Her really cool version of zentangles. Take a book with you and "just begin"...but I think she also threatened to boot me...

Then my oh-so-cool spiritual mentor suggested journalling to record my dreams and progress. So I told myself "just begin"...

But because I'm really pig-headed, I knew I needed a reason.
Yeah yeah I know doing it for myself should be reason enough
but I have self-love issues yet.
...besides all the other issues!!

So I signed up for the Make Your Mark community art project
launched by the LaGrange Art League
with 200 journals donated by Dick Blick Art Materials
and it's such a cool book
so full of possibilities
and smells like an art store

I have a year to 'make my mark'
And to share the journal so that others can
'make their mark'

So don't be surprised if I contact you

For now
I have to get over this really really scary looking blank page
and
'just begin'

There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth...
not going all the way
and not starting.

  3. A journal is a journal is a journal and I have quite a few. Some not finished, some almost finished, some just blank. I just bought another journal, those popular ones with the "good" textured papers, oh what's the name I forgot. See? For me, my blog makes for a journal and the other stuff painting, drawing, sketching, and just plain doodling are on canvas or wood or paper. I would say, start "doodling." You don't know what will turn up on the page until you look at it very closely and start seeing little faces peeking out at you or a hand or one eye. It's fun. Enjoy.

  5. Oh dear!!! I am at the same stage!! I've had the journal for 2 weeks now and haven't "made a mark"!! It's quite intimidating to "just begin", isn't it!! But soon, I will knuckle down and do it!! And you will too!! We'll have to trade sometime in the next year!!

  6. Ah Hah! I´ve been keeping a journal for over 20 years, trouble is that when I started it mý eyesight was better, oh dear! So now I have trouble reading the early entries even with glasses... But this is my diary journal, recording little things and big things in my life. But even after all this time, I know when I go to write it tonight, I´ll still pause thinking what am I going to say? Just like a post on a blog, or an email to a friend.........So who is the best friend you have, yourself. So dear friend, this is what is happening, this is what I am thinking, and do you know....?

Of course there are dream diaries, work journals and even Captain Kirk had a Captain´s log! I guess it is not thinking, it is just doing that is important, let it flow..............

  7. Yay ! Now that is taking a leap ! Brava. You know I will add whatever you ask of me along the way. So, how to deal with blank page a phobia ? Open the book anywhere, take out your most favorite color of paint(whatever kind floats your boat, and slap it on there ! Make a monoprint (close the book and then re-open it to see what it made), use an old credit card to smear it, use a paintbrush, use your fingers...just "begin"...;) Ok - one less blank page ! Repeat as needed...
Have fun with it, Lovely Elena !

  8. Bravo to you! Make a mark. Any mark. Then you have started and the rest will hopefully fall into place.

  9. I think you ought to "accidently" spill your coffee on that blank page, then it won't be blank anymore and maybe not so intimidating. Have fun with it.
