Then I moved further out to a more ruralized area, away from the malls and restaurants. Away from the mass of people, the women who look down their noses, the entitled teens in their fancy cars, and the unrelenting traffic. Away from trees and ponds that although beautiful made me sad because I could still hear the 'noise'. I could still see the geese flying in a topsy turvy row reminiscent of a scrawling doctor's signature. Each fighting to be in the lead, just like the masses far below them. And I couldn't hear myself, let alone connect to myself.
And the first thing I noticed in my new surroundings was the quiet. I could hear the bees. I could hear the birds and the trees and smell "green"- did you know "green" has a smell? I didn't. Then I heard the geese and I looked up. And saw the most perfect V formation. It was beautiful. And everything seemed right again.
And I wondered why. I hadn't moved too far for such a drastic change. Nature seemed more natural here. Could if be that the increase in noise, negativity, shallowness, all served to interfere with the natural vibrations of things like birds in flight? Not far fetched when I think of how I feel after watching the news or being around negative or angry people. However, I learned that this 'signal interference' isn't permanent. You just have to get away from the thing causing the interference even for a little while.
And since being away and looking back from the outside, I found little pockets of places and people who seem to be resistant to that interference. Perhaps because their signals are stronger and serve to block out such nonsense. Who knows?
For now, I'm closely watching the adjoining town that seems to be growing into a 'baby-Orland'. I'm not as worried now. Because I have two choices; I can strengthen my signal to block out the interference or I can move further away.
For now, I'll watch the geese.

you just summed up the beauty of our cottage in the woods....perfectly !
ReplyDeleteThat's a great picture of formation:) I don't know, we live in the county and the city is the next door house? What kind of nonsense is that? In any event, it doesn't matter where you live, what matters is that when you go in your home and out into your private backyard, you can take in the beautiful scents and sounds of your very own privacy and the world out there does not exist. That's the way I see it. I enjoyed your post and wish you a great Sunday and by the way, thanks for those inspiring words you left on my blog. I appreciate it.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I believe, not to change the subject, that formations are for migration and not casual flight which very well maybe practice. In formation there is still a constant changeover in the leader to prevent exhaustion. On the other hand there is that theory of interference of our very necessary bees by cell phone usage scrambling their communication or worse causing their demise. Ohh! Are you still with me here? I live rural because I my deep connections to the earth are necessary to my very existence. Probably everybody's.
