Nature Lessons

Since moving here a year ago and becoming a new gardener, I rely on others for information. One of my favorite places is the Morton Arboretum's plant clinic. I send them an email and they quickly respond with suggestions and handy tips.

This time around I was asking about creating transplants. In the text of the response, this tidbit caught my attention "...insects and diseases are attracted to stressed plants...". Hmmm. Now it seems I recently heard about the medical society finally realizing that there just may be a link between stress and disease in humans. But it's not new information considering that the first scientist to research and coin the term "stress' was in 1930. But it seems some are quick to prescribe pills to 'make the stress go away'. Now don't they know that bandaid approach doesn't always work?

So if stressed plants are subject to these attacks, why wouldn't we? Do we really believe ourselves to be far superior to nature? Ok, so we have the gift of speech. And opposable  (hee hee) thumbs. But we also have the choice. We can choose to be happy. Or we can choose to be miserable. But sometimes, one in a while, it seems that I'm choking in the weeds. And that fine line between being happy or miserable is hard to find. Hmmm....maybe I should ditch the doc and go to the plant clinic instead...

  1. maybe you meant opposable thumbs....thanks for making me laugh early this morning :)

my niece can't choose to be happy....nor can a dear friend of mine. depression has a hold on them and they have to rely on medication....lucky for us though, happiness is a choice, but when stress is bogging us down, even that choice makes things so hard......

  2. maybe not ditch the doc (I am around here today because of those stress reducer pills), but certainly finding other tools like hanging out with plants, riding that bike of yours, meditation, oh and lots of art making for me, in conjunction with, for sure !!!!
I have been thinking lately how very lucky we are that there are so many wonderful tools around for us to use. We just gotta do the picking them up part. ;)
    Big Love to you!

  3. You absorb minerals from working in the soil and vitamin D from toiling in the sun. And peace of mind when tending the gardens. The rich earth smells are intoxicating. My theory on weeds... there is only one type of weed and it disguises itself to look like whatever you planted.
