RIP

I just found out hubby's best friend, Brian, passed away. I know in my heart that it is only our physical body that dies and that our soul, our essence, moves into another place we cannot see. But even so it doesn't soothe the ache in my heart which has quickly moved into anger. He didn't have to die so soon.

He recently discovered he had lung cancer which had spread throughout his body. Results of so much smoking and long hours sitting in a bar drinking hard liquor. Couple that with a high stress job as a manager in Chicago's Streets & San. And what's it all for? Did he enjoy the time he was here?

When I met him I had just started learning to ride the Harley. He called me Pocahontas because of the braids I wore to keep my hair from becoming a tangled mess. Like a big brother he patiently listened with a big smile as I explained excitedly about the day's accomplishments. He'd tell my hubby how lucky he was that he had found someone to enjoy life with. I'd tell him he could enjoy life too. What was stopping him? And he'd turn back to his drink and cigarette and say no, no I'm too old.

But a couple years ago he bought a motorcycle and joined us on a ride. At the first stop he had that huge grin and thanked us. Said he had forgotten there was life out there.

So why did he have to die so soon after discovering this? It's just not fair. And I guess it makes me realize that it is important to take care of yourself so that you don't check out just as you are starting to find life. So, I'll get started with taking care of myself better Monday and will discuss it on the Fluffy Exterior blog.

Goodbye Brian.
I'm going to miss watching you in my mirror.

  1. None of us know what our days are here......loss is extremely painful and sometimes words of condolence seem trite.
Brian made the choice to step forward and enjoy a portion of his life; there was not a waste. He made a conscious decision to join in the fun with you, and that is how, later, you will remember him.
We don't know what pushes people to the choices they make; I have empathy for him, but delight that he could ride while he did.
    Every day is precious.
    I send you many hugs.....

    XXOO!!

  2. I'm so sorry to hear about your hubby's best friend! How is he handling it? Those are all tough questions---death is the great mystery of life. I don't think we're meant to know all the answers. It sure would be nice though! I think things happen for a reason and we're meant to learn something from them. It's just awfully hard to figure out WHAT sometimes!! I'm glad he had started to enjoy life. Maybe that is the lesson---don't wait too long because you don't know how long you've got. Hugs to you and hubby too.

  3. I'm sorry for your loss. His loss. It is a shame that he didn't live his life more fully. There are too many sad people like this. So Yes! Take care of yourself and grab all the happiness you can! None of us knows how much time we have here so make the most of it.

  4. I'm so sorry to hear this, dearest Elena. My heart goes out to all who love him.

It's so true, we never know how much time we have left. We should try to live each day fully - it's just such a difficult thing to remember until something like this reminds us.

    Thinking of you, dear friend.

    Love and hugs,

  8. Oh how heart breaking. It is beautiful that he found life before he lost it. Maybe that way he was able to die a happy man. May he rest in peace.

    Sorry for your loss.

  10. So sorry for all the pain you remember now Elena, I'm sure the time will come when you and the hubby recall the sparkle in his eye when he started to ride with you. It is so sad that we kill ourselves with addictions. I think we know deep down the best is yet to come.

  11. why wait til Monday? We have to be living our lives to the maximum no matter if we chose to do that sitting and enjoying the sunlight, or riding off into the distance on our bikes. We could be run over by a truck tomorrow... why wait?
