I am visual. I need to sketch or write things down in order to recall them. This summer I learned that writing morning pages, as described in The Artist's Way, is a good tool to clear the mind-clutter that would otherwise fill every dark corner with its slimy tentacles. A rather cool collaboration between hand and mind. Teamwork.
So what if this collaboration extends to include the heart (desires). Could the heart, mind, hand work together to translate my soul's whisperings? Hmmm. Then I remembered that during the winter of 2007 I was desperate to improve my situation, and happened to discover vision boards. Basically, the idea is to affix pictures or words on a poster board as visual cues to what you'd like to attract to your life. So during Christmas break I surrounded myself with magazines and started cutting out pictures and words that made me feel good. I didn't have a clue what I was doing or what I wanted to attract. I just cut anything that attracted my attention. I had a home with trees, a happy family, paid bills, strength, health, happiness, guitars, spirituality and creativity. I had to be careful not to focus on the thoughts of "yeah right, this is nonsense, how the hell would this be possible." So I figured, if it works or not, I have this time where I'm content cutting and pasting like a kid.
For a while I kept it where I could see it. When I started packing things away to begin showing my condo, I placed it in the closet and forgot about it. During a drawing class in Nov of 2008 I drew the motos and decided I wanted a house in the picture too. I remembered the one on my vision board so I dug it out. I was amused that most of the things on that board had been achieved. Perhaps not the house but that was ok, I still liked the picture and maybe it wasn't meant to be. So I sketched the house with a few modifications and decided to use it as my Christmas card. During this time we went to an open house for what would become our new home. It wasn't until later that I realized how similar the real estate shots of the home were to my Christmas card version. Even the owner looked confused when I showed her my card. Odd? Coincidence? Synchronicity?
Magic? Nope. I think it's giving validity to a little thought. It's surrounding yourself with positive thoughts and images that raise your vibrational level. Don't believe me? How do you feel when you watch the news or those sad commercials? Negative breeds negative. So why wouldn't positive breed positive.
So I'm going to create another vision board. I still don't know what I want to attract but it'll be interesting to see what images attract me this time around. Perhaps I'll learn something about myself. It's about trust after all. About getting out of my own way, refusing to listen to the little doubting Thomas in my head. About knowing that God/Spirit will lead me. I just don't hear it all the time. I'm visual, remember. So these little pictures are my way of understanding what I really want.
Anyone interested in making a vision board?
Christine Kane's blog does a nice job explaining the process:Christine Kane
What a great idea. I am going to start looking for images today. I will let you know what I find. Did you exchange your ATCs yet?
ReplyDeleteThat is a great plan, we would have that exercise when revisiting the Artists Way. I'm thinking a sketchbook, again. I don't have many magazines and recycle my clutter as quickly as I can. New ideas for a new year. And what about that guitar?
ReplyDeleteMiki: We exchange ATCs Thursday. I make a lousy 'artist-to-be' since I hate giving up my creations-not because they're any good, just because they're mine.
ReplyDeleteDoris: Printing things off the internet works well too. Last time I copied some items and pasted them onto a word page so they'd all print on one sheet. Plus, you can DRAW!
Elena,
ReplyDeleteit's a delight to see you finding your path here and making the connecitons as you are, it truly is wonderful esteem building movement... I remember doing this at a collage workshop with Jonathan Talbot and with in one year all the things that I had written about and shared with my art partner that weekend happened. It has been proven to be a very powerful tool.. I put the volkswagon on my wall it's a 1962 1/2 year old image of this old VW.. I had the opportuity to purchase one so then My dream would have come true but when really seeing the reality of it... I would have to stop making art or purchase it and pay for two insurances so that I could drive this little beetle around and then have a van to haul the art to the fairs and all. So not to be a bubble popper I learned that yes I came really close to having the dream in my driveway but was it a good choice for me really...? That's like wanting a Hot black old Jeep Wrangler with big nobble tires, lisence plates that said LNCROW4 on them and me with this wild woman look... Well the wild woman is not hard to bring to reality...heheheh but the jeep again is something that isn't going to happen... funny how this boards or visually image things happen aren't there. I'm a believer in them...
